Abstract
Metaphase chromosomes from HeLa cells support the synthesis in vitro of polyribonucleotides by the RNA polymerase of Escherichia coli, although the rate of synthesis with chromosomes as template is lower than that obtained with free HeLa-DNA. The composition of the enzymic products formed with both types of template is of the AU [adenine-uridine] type and does not resemble that of the normal RNA component of the chromosomes.
