Abstract
Earth movements in California caused by seismic activity in the Earth's crust have been measured by precise surveys at different intervals of time since the 1900 earthquake. Surveys made in 1947 give positive evidence of a slow continuous movement of the area west of the San Andreas Fault, relative to the area east of the Fault. The outer coastal area is moving northwestward at an annual rate of about five cm per year and has a total displacement of three meters since 1880, the date of tho first precise surveys.Additional surveys are in progress at the present time for the purpose of determining the extent of the area in which this movement is occurring as well as the magnitude of the movement.
