Abstract
Under aerobic conditions, washed suspensions of H. anomala form ester from ethanol, alone or in presence of acetate. No ester is formed in the absence of O. The ester formed is ethyl acetate. The ester formed disappears after exhaustion of the ethanol substrate. The effects of pH, age of culture, ethanol concn. and acetate concn. on ester formation were investigated. Several alcohols were tested; ester was formed at an appreciable rate only from ethanol or glucose. Acetaldehyde did not give rise to any ester, but in low concns. acetaldehyde stimulated ester formation in presence of ethanol.
