A survey for red variables in the LMC I

Abstract
The first results of a UK Schmidt-based V- and I-band photographic survey for large-amplitude red variable stars in a field of the LMC are presented. 40 red variables were found and periods were determined for 24. Infrared JHK photometry is given for all 40. Eight of the sample constitute a subgroup of relatively luminous M-type stars having periods, where determined, in excess of 555 day. Thirteen are probably carbon Mira variables including nine extremely red ones similar to the galactic example R For. The remainder are red-giant variables of which nine are probably M-type Miras. Further evidence for the period–luminosity relationship obeyed by all LMC M- and C-type Mira variables is also presented.
