Abstract
Flavoxate, a smooth muscle relaxant, compared with propantheline showed no significant difference in clinical effect on voiding disturbances in hyperactive neurogenic bladders, but fewer side effects. Both drugs increased bladder capacity significantly, but flavoxate did not increase residual urine in contrast to propantheline. Flavoxate given intravenously caused depression of intravesical pressure in most hyperactive bladders, and in some of these also reduced EMG from the striated sphincter, probably by feedback from the detrusor. Possible mechanisms for increase in EMG observed in some are discussed. Keywords
