Abstract
The excitation of the HCN laser fuelled with hydrocarbons and nitrogen or nitrogen-containing compounds is discussed. It is proposed that the reaction of nitrogen atoms with organic radicals produces vibrationally excited HCN and leads to a population inversion. The proposed role of nitrogen atoms is consistent with the reported behaviour of the laser. A possible HCN chemical laser system is briefly discussed. Keywords
