Small intestinal adenocarcinoma complicating regional enteritis

Abstract
Three new [human] cases of small intestinal adenocarcinoma complicating Crohn''s disease are reported. Other cases (75) have been reported to date. Analysis of these cases in comparison with de novo adenocarcinoma of the small bowel shows the following: occurrence at a younger age; occurrence in distal small bowel; a male predilection; and a worse prognosis. The increasing number of these cases suggested that small intestinal regional enteritis predisposed to adenocarcinoma. Improved prognosis can only be achieved with earlier diagnosis.
