POST-ADRENALECTOMY DIURESIS

Abstract
Food and water intake, urine output and wt. changes were measured in adult [male] adrenalec-tomized rats under a variety of conditions. Rats showing acute symptoms within 2 wks. or less following adrenal-ectomy showed only slight if any diuresis. Water intake was reduced, but was not entirely due to inanition. Rats with chronic adrenal insufficiency developed a marked diuresis which apparently could last until terminal symptoms supervened. Cortical extracts in the relatively large doses necessary to maintain normal appetite and growth did not completely remedy the altered water exchange. 1% NaCl in drinking water maintained life and a water exchange not significantly different from that induced by the same treatment in normal animals. 1/10% KC1 in the drinking water was toxic to operated animals and resulted in diuresis much more severe than in intact animals. Theelin (100 I.U. per day) was toxic to adrenalectomized animals and produced conspicuous diuresis. A low ratio of water intake to urine output accompanied all post-adrenalectomy conditions.
