Abstract
A simple expression is derived for the force exerted on an anisotropic paramagnetic crystal by a magnetic field having gradients in two perpendicular directions. It shows that there is in general no direct relation between the force on an isotropic and an anisotropic sample in the same field, so that care must be exercised in interpreting the results of susceptibility measurements on anisotropic crystals by the Faraday method.
