Abstract
The energy levels of the 3 d7 , 3 d6 4 s and 3 d5 4 s2 configurations in Fe II have been studied. Theoretical formulae for the energies have been fitted to observed spectroscopic energy levels, and estimates of the relevant quantum mechanical parameters obtained. These have been used to compute transition probabilities for magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole radiation for all transitions within and between the metastable levels of the three configurations. Detailed results are presented for selected multiplets, and compared with astronomical observations of emission lines in peculiar stars. The possibility of observing [Fe II ] absorption lines in the solar spectrum is considered.
