Cyclobutadiene, Benzocyclobutadiene, and Biphenylene

Abstract
The difference in the ground state reactivity of cyclobutadiene, benzocyclobutadiene, and biphenylene is attributed to the combination of their aromatic stabilization (or destabilization), the presence of the strain in the four-membered ring system, and the appearance of the localized double bonds.
