Abstract
The subalpine vegetation above tree line at Blanket Bay consists for the most part of a rather open-canopied snow-tussock herbfield dominated by species of Chionochloa with a minor shrub component which increases in importance with slope and approach to tree line. A dense, mixed subalpine scrub occupies a belt of a few hundred feet between dwarfed, high-altitude forest below and snow-tussock herbfield above, but it is confined to north to west aspect slopes. Immediately above the tree limit, therefore, adjacent north-west and south-east aspect slopes show striking vegetational differences. Quantitative data from a point intercept transect are used to demonstrate this. Keywords
