Abstract
"27 hungry rats were given 36 training trials in a simple runway to food reward. Experimental Ss were extinguished with the empty food-cup present in the goal box on half the trials; control Ss were extinguished with the food-cup continuously present, as during training. Greater resistance to extinction occurred in the experimental group. This supports the view that resistance to extinction is a function of the maintenance of motivation, which is facilitated by the intermittent schedule on which the food-cup is introduced during extinction."
