Abstract
To the Editor: Categorization of individuals into groups is an epidemiologic exercise often practiced in the study of a disease.Shortly after the first cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) had been reported,1 two "high-risk" groups were named: homosexuals and drug addicts. These two groups appeared to have higher incidence rates than other groups that could have been considered. Moreover, this grouping seemed to fit a particular working hypothesis: that the syndrome was caused by a transmissible agent spreading in a way similar to that of the hepatitis B virus. This seemed to be confirmed after cases of AIDS . . .Keywords
