Chagas's Disease — Another Hazard in Acute Leukemia

Abstract
To the Editor: We have recently seen two cases of South American trypanosomiasis (Chagas's disease) in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In both, the parasites were accidentally found in blood smears.One patient, a 28-year-old woman, was found to have acute lymphoblastic leukemia in April, 1972. Remission was obtained during prednisone, vincristine and daunomycin treatment; cranial cobalt therapy and several blood transfusions were also given. In August, 1972, parasites — Trypanosoma cruzi — were found in the blood. The complement-fixation test for Chagas's disease was negative. Retrospective studies of all the patient's smears from the beginning of acute lymphoblastic leukemia . . .
