Abstract
Sodium acetate was fed at the rate of one lb./cow daily to 18 milking cows on a normal diet during 10 day periods. No effect was observed on milk production, milk fat percentage, blood sugar, or blood ketones. It had been found previously that the feeding of comparable amounts to cows with a diet-depressed milk fat level brought about immediate recovery. This suggests that there is a minimum level of acetate which is necessary for normal milk fat production, but that after this has been met, additional amounts will not further increase the milk fat to higher than normal levels.
