Abstract
THIS WORK has been stimulated by the very interesting motion picture presentation by Iverson,1 given in Chicago before the American Academy of Dermatology and Syphilology, in December, 1951. The removal of tattoos has heretofore belonged to the domain of the plastic surgeon, who, depending upon the size of the tattoo, either excised the tattooed area and closed the defect by direct suture or covered the defect with a skin graft. Neither approach has in all cases led to a satisfactory cosmetic result. Besides the surgical approach, various chemical and mechanical methods have been employed directed toward the superficial destruction of the skin, with resulting scar formation. None of them have been satisfactory. Lerner2 used superficial cross hatched scarification through a lake of 10% aqueous tannic acid solution. Karpelis3 scarified the skin deeply with a fine sharp knife and rubbed in potassium permanganate. Janson4Keywords
