Abstract
ATP, RNA and DNA were used as markers for metabolic activity and tissue growth in Meganyctiphanes norvegica M. Sars. A marked seasonal variation in ATP was observed, from 2 μg/mg dry weight in winter to 8 μg/mg in spring, suggesting an increase in metabolic activity during reproduction. The total pool of adenine nucleotides (ATP+ADP + AMP) reached a maximum in late April, while the energy charge of the adenylate system remained high from February to May inclusive. The concentrations of RNA and DNA were inversely correlated with the individual dry weight. RNA showed a significant correlation (p <0.05, r = 0.83) with estimates of growth rates from other studies on the same population. DNA was not correlated with the growth rate although the DNA levels showed marked seasonal variations, with a peak in February coinciding with the period of high synthetic activity of the gonads. Keywords
