Observations on the Value of the Bordet-Gengou Medium for the Cultivation of Haemophilus pertussis

Abstract
Efforts were made, unsuccessfully, to find a medium which would promote rapid and better growth of H. pertussis than the Bordet-Gengou medium. Peptone, when incorporated in the medium, inhibits the growth of pertussis, the more highly digested peptones being the more inhibitory. There was evidence that potato extracts provided optimal concns. of amino acids and peptides required for growth. Incorporation of aspartic acid in the medium for the isolation of H. pertussis might stimulate its growth and at the same time inhibit the growth of H. influenzae. Blood can be replaced by serum although for maximal results the former is superior.
