Abstract
Although syncretism is a confusing concept, this article recommends it not be abandoned, but that its many meanings be outlined. The article summarizes debate on the term, and presents an inventory of options open to the scholar who wishes to define syncretism. In order to provide fresh impulses to the debate, four suggestions are offered. Rrst, the distinction between subjective and objective definitions is tempered. The author discusses his own subjectivity in the epilogue. Second, the role of power relations in the rise of syncretism and in polemics against it is emphasized. Third, it recommends viewing syncretism as a means of transforming religious symbolic systems. Fourth, an attempt is made at bringing unchallenged as well as controversial syncretism together into one definition. Keywords
