I129nuclear quadrupole interaction in trigonal Te and the role of oxygen contamination

Abstract
I129 Mössbauer spectra of trigonal Te are shown to be sensitive to the presence of oxygen contamination of the starting enriched Te128 metal used in these measurements. The oxygen is shown to be chemically bonded as a TeO2 phase. Results on pure Te taken with a thin INa129 absorber (15 mg/cm2) yield, at 4.2 K, e2qQ=397.4(1.7) MHz, η=0.70(1), δ=+1.16(1) mm/s, and Γobs=1.13(1) mm/s.
