Abstract
Zephiran (R) - Trisodium Phosphate digestion, when followed by a sterile, acid buffer is an improved procedure for the early recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It provides cleaner sediments, eliminates the need for critical neutralization with hydrochloric acid, and removes inhibiting amounts of Zephiran (R), thus permitting sediments to be cultured directly on agar media. Both the rates and amounts of growth of tubercle bacilli from clinical specimens are significantly enhanced, when compared to those obtained from unwashed, acid neutralized sediments inoculated to egg medium. Keywords
