Abstract
The effects of 3 centrally acting respiratory stimulants (prethcamide, ethamivan, and doxapram) were studied in patients with moderate to severe pulmonary insufficiency due to chronic obstructive emphysema and related disorders. Each drug was shown to cause a mild decrease in arterial CO2 tension when given alone over short periods in the specified dosages. In addition, ethamivan and doxapram improved O2 tolerance. In pulmonary disease with depressed ventilation these drugs may allow the administration of O2 without risking further hypo-ventilation. In order to obtain maximal benefit, the drugs should be combined not only with O2 but also with agents which decrease the work of breathing. Keywords
