Abstract
Of 54 patients who received prolonged i.v. hyperalimentation during the past 4 yr, 6 developed progressive, characteristic skin lesions. These cutaneous manifestations frequently were accompanied by abdominal symptoms resembling those of acrodermatitis enteropathica in many respects. In the first 4 of these 6 patinets, skin eruptions disappeared promptly after the initiation of oral feeding, which led to the assumption that these skin manifestations are due to some unknown nutrient deficiency. Experiences with the remaining 2 patients led to the presumption that the underlying pathology was Zn deficiency.
