Preparation and acceptor power of the pentafluorogermanate ion

Abstract
Preparations of [(C3H7)4N][GeF5], [(C4H9)4N][GeF5], [(C4H9)4N][GeF5(H2O)], and [(C6H5)4As][GeF5] are described and their infrared spectra reported. The pentafluorogermanate ion forms a stable 1:1 adduct with ammonia, with ΔH = 17.5 ± 1.0 kcal mole−1 for the reaction: [(C3H7)4N][GeF5(NH3)] (s) → [(C3H7)4N][GeF5] (s) + NH3(g). The value for the corresponding pentafluorosilicate system is ΔH = 12.0 ± 0.5 kcal mole−1.
