Abstract
FOR TEEN-AGERS who show personality disruption under the pressure of their impulses and normal external stresses, residential placement is the treatment of choice. Such adolescents lack the normal emotional strength to allow them to use their inherent emotional, intellectual, and physical potential toward necessary adolescent emancipation and individuation. With the external ego support provided by a residential treatment unit, these distrubed adolescents may become able to cope with their inner drives without emotional disintegration, and then gradually build their ego strength and capability through ego mastery and growth. In this therapeutic process these adolescent patients must learn how to express meaningfully and use their sexual urges and feelings toward the fullest emotional growth and maturity.
