Abstract
Measures of inspector and inspection systems effectiveness are evaluated. These include Wang's effectiveness and cost statistics, the signal detection theory statistics of differentiation and bias, Johnson and Funke's percentage correct statistic and the author's statistics of effectiveness and adjusted miss rate. The hit rate, defect rate and false alarm rate are related to the other statistics and presented as measures in their own right. No one statistic satisfies all the needs of a universal measure but the effectiveness statistic may be the best, particularly for high efficiencies. An important feature of this study is the separation of inspector ability from chance occurances. Values of the measures are given which indicate when chance selectivity becomes important.Keywords
