Abstract
Six cases illustrating the protean manifestations of carcinoma of the pancreas have been described. Two presented with superior vena cava obstruction. The remaining cases presented with a broncho-pneumonia, a pleural effusion, pulmonary infarcts and an oesophageal obstruction. In all cases there was no evidence of an intra-abdominal lesion during the first few months. A carcinoma which presents in this way will probably be an anaplastic type of growth with a rapid downhill course. The importance of a barium swallow in investigating the cause of hilar gland enlargement is emphasised, and may lead to an earlier diagnosis of intra-abdominal malignancy.
