Abstract
Examined the consistency of individual differences in attitude change following an act of forced compliance by having 124 undergraduates write 2 counter-attitudinal essays 5 wks apart. Attitude changes were only moderately correlated (r = .47) between sessions. Larger correlations were obtained between measure of perceived freedom of choice and between choice and attitude change. Findings are consistent with statements that question the attempt to predict behavior without determining the reliability of the behavioral criteria; they reemphasize the need to consider the perspective of the Ss who participate in forced compliance paradigms.
