Hydration and ion-exchange process in carboxylic membranes. Part 1.—Infrared spectroscopic investigation of the acid membranes

Abstract
An infrared investigation of Teflon FEP and PTFE membranes grafted with poly(acrylic acid) is performed. The changes in the principal absorption bands are examined as a function of the degree of humidity, the density of grafting and the nature of the polymeric matrix of the acid membrane. The prominent role played by the dimerisation of carboxylic groups which gives rise to a network of intermolecular hydrogen bonds is assessed.
