Differentiation Between Early and Late Membrane Antigen on Human Lymphoblastoid Cell Lines Infected With Epstein-Barr Virus. I. Immunofluorescence2

Abstract
We detected 2 serologically distinct components of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific membrane antigen on human lymphoblastoid cell lines by the selective absorption of various EBV-positive sera from Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients. The early membrane antigen was detected on cells cultured in the presence of cytosine arabinoside which effectively blocked viral DNA synthesis and the synthesis of viral capsid antigen (VCA), whereas late membrane antigen was found almost exclusively on cells that had progressed to VCA synthesis. The blocking of direct conjugate binding to the cells by unconjugated sera was demonstrate.
