Abstract
(1) Characteristics of hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) stands were studied in relation to intensity of use by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during winter. (2) Significant variables partially correlated with deer use were crown closure and the interaction between food, crown closure and the percent stocking of balsam fir. The maximum variability explained by these parameters was 26%. (3) Sites selected by deer in which to bed down during severe weather conditions had dense crown closure and less wind flow than surrounding areas. Keywords
