Abstract
Seven viruses active against Streptomyces griseus were characterized. The classification scheme formulated is based primarily on the serological grouping of the phages. With the aid of 4 antisera, 3 serological groups were formed. These were termed A, B, and C and comprise the following phages: Group A, W-1A, W-2a, B and C-131; Group B, W-1 and W-5; and Group C, W-3. Other characteristics of the individual phages determined include: latent periods, burst sizes, morphology, cross-resistance grouping, lytic specificity and physical inactivation patterns. In addition to providing groupings and demonstrating the relationships between the phages, the serological character provides a rapid means of identification by a comparison of known k values with neutralizing antisera. Thus a classification system which had been developed for viruses of true bacteria can be extended to the taxo-nomic relationships among viruses active on actinomycetes. Keywords
