Abstract
Two papers recently appeared in the literature purporting to show that the warming of the earth's surface due to increase in the atmospheric CO2 concentration should be an order of magnitude less than predicted by most climate models. The detailed analysis of the response of one particular model to doubled CO2 concentrations is used to demonstrate the shortcomings in the approaches adopted in the two papers. The chief of these is the failure to recognize that increased CO2 concentrations have a direct effect on the temperature of the atmosphere as well as on that of the earth's surface. Keywords
