New Instability Concept in Avalanche Diode Oscillation

Abstract
The essential nature of the avalanche diode oscillator is discussed on the basis of the Volterra's ecological system utilizing a nonlinear competition equation which has an oscillatory solution. The solution describes the IMPATT diode mode in a small-signal region, and in a large-signal region, transforms into the TRAPATT diode mode. The characteristics of the two modes are treated in such a way to suggest a unified fundamental concept. The importance of the nonlinear nature of the avalanche process is stressed.Keywords
