Abstract
Rocks of the Kaihikuan Stage, defined faunally and by the occurrence of adjacent Etalian and Oretian fossiliferous rocks, are described in four sections in the Southland Syncline. A section at Aparima River is proposed as a reference for the stage, and formational units proposed for the Aparima River section are applicable elsewhere in Southland. Kaihikuan rocks become finer-grained toward the south-east in Southland and Otago. Apparently unfaulted contacts of Kaihikuan rocks with Etalian and Balfour rocks occur in Nelson. Kaihikuan faunas, although dominated by brachiopods, appear to be free of facies control in some respects. Keywords
