Abstract
Knowledge of advantages and disadvantages identified by each generation in multigenerational households (MGHs) composed of three generations helps to guide decision making by families and policymakers as well as assist professionals who provide clinical services to these families. As part of an exploratory study, survey data were collected from 171 respondents, representing 43 families and three generations. Using a panel of experts and content analysis techniques, categories were developed to sort the data for further analysis. Advantages outweighed disad vantages, particularly for the oldest generation. Family closeness and increased tangible resources were the most frequent advantages given. Intrahousehold family relationship stress and issues of privacy were the most frequent disadvantages identified. Statistically significant generational differences in responses were identified and explained by individual and family life stage theory. Implications for future research on the MGH are presented. Keywords
