Abstract
The current research literature on the community integration of people with severe mental handicap living in staffed residential settings is reviewed. How community integration is defined has developed as the provision of community-based alternatives to traditional institutions has proceeded. An initial concern with residence in the community and the re-establishment of more frequent family contact has been broadened to embrace use of community amenities, participation and friendship. Research findings generally validate the direction of development being taken in the building up of community provision in the place of long-stay hospitals. However, there is a great potential and need for effective ways of promoting social integration for people with mental handicap beyond the limits of family, staff. other people with mental handicap and the occasional member of the public.
