Abstract
The author presents microphotographs of the ovaries of senescent female rats showing young follicles during the whole period of senescence (persistent estrus, persistent diestrus and anestrus). The ovaries of very old females can still be stimulated to produce hemorrhagic follicles following injections of pregnancy urine. During the period of persistent diestrus preceding the senile anestrus the ovaries still produce progesterone. This is shown by the presence of functional corpora lutea and by the shape of the stromal nuclei of the endometrium. It is concluded that the genital senescence of the female rat is not initiated by the atrophy of the ovaries but by the cessation of the alternating gonadotrophic stimulation.
