Abstract
This article explores briefly the use of classical and modern literature as an aid to understanding those mentally disordered offenders who not infrequently raise anxiety, and sometimes fear, in those charged with their management. Reference is made also to other media as aids in this process. Literature is the one place in any society, where, within the secrecy of our own heads, we can hear voices talking about everything in every possible way. (Salman Rushdie, unpublished lecture)
