Abstract
A resazurin soln. was prepared by using 11 mg. of dye in 200 ml. of H2O. 0.1 ml. of this soln. was added to 0.2 ml. of semen and incubated at 45[degree]C. Time for reduction to pink and further reduction to white was recorded for 924 samples of 45 Guernsey, Jersey and Holstein bulls. The relationship of pink and white endpoints to survival at 3.3[degree] and 4.5[degree]C (94 samples), initial motility (564 samples), concn. (558 samples) and methylene blue reduction time (564 samples), was high. There was a highly significant correlation of -0.141 between pink endpoint and non-return rate (371 samples used in 20 or more 1st and 2d service breedings). An alteration of the method to include a preliminary 30 min. incubation at 45[degree]C before adding resazurin resulted in a highly significant correlation of -0.169 between white endpoint and non-return rate (304 samples). Keywords
