Abstract
Four staining procedures were tested for differential diagnosis of histomoniasis and mycosis. The Periodic acid-Schiff method was found superior for staining liver sections. Gridley''s technique was satisfactory in staining both parasites, but did not differentiate the liver cells. Grocott''s Entamoeba stain was satisfactory for histomonads but not for Candida albicans. The hematoxylin and eosin procedures were unsatisfactory for either species of parasite. The Periodic acid-Schiff staining technique is recommended for use in diagnostic laboratories for identification of the etiological agent in suspected cases of histomoniasis or mycosis.
