A DIRECT CENTRAL INHIBITORY ACTION OF DROMICALLY CONDUCTED IMPULSES

Abstract
Motoneurons of the 1st sacral segment of the cat''s spinal cord were caused to discharge a volley of impulses after a single synaptic delay by applying single shocks to the 1st sacral dorsal root or the ventral white column. These 2 neuron systems were inhibited at short time intervals (0 to 1.5 msec.) by a single shock to the 6th lumbar dorsal root. A similar rela-tion held between conditioning by 5th lumbar dorsal root shocks and 7th lumbar motoneuron discharges. Since only the primary afferent fibers involved by the conditioning shock can be active during the first 0.5 msec. it follows that the inhibition must be a direct action of the primary afferent impulses. Some internuncial impulses probably exert a comparable inhibitory action. Other conditioning effects obtained by stimulation of neighboring dorsal roots are described.
