Abstract
The infrared reflection and transmission spectra of polycrystalline trigonal mercury sulfide have been measured between 800 and 40 cm−1 at room temperature and 77°K. From these measurements, in conjunction with the Raman data, the frequencies and symmetry character of the fundamental vibrational modes could be identified. The reststrahlen band in cubic mercury sulfide was observed at 177 cm−1 by using evaporated films for transmission measurements in the region of the transverse and longitudinal optical phonon frequencies. Keywords
