Abstract
The roots of the Guil nappe in the French Alps have been obliterated by later dislocations which produced the fan-shaped group of Briancon thrust slices. The thrust slices were formed in an area of intersection in which nappe emplacement by overthrusting toward the west and later fracturing accompanied by overthrusting to the east took place. The resulting contraction was probably largely responsible for the disappearance of the roots of the nappe.
