Abstract
Fieldwork conducted in the Eastern Province of Zambia between 1965 and 1971 has yielded evidence for a succession of prehistoric industries extending from almost 40,000 years ago into recent times. This succession indicates the gradual emergence of the microlithic mode 5 technology of the ‘Late Stone Age’ from a ‘Middle Stone Age’ predecessor. Excavations at the Kalemba site, so far uncompleted, may be expected to extend the known sequence back into earlier phases of the ‘Middle Stone Age’. Analysis of the abundant artefact aggregates, soil samples, osteological material and other finds, is continuing and a full report will be published in due course.
