Abstract
In order to illustrate the potentialities of application of the methods used in the dynamics of nonlinear systems to crystal plasticity, we consider a simple description of the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect. The dynamic properties of dislocations are modelled through a small scale averaging procedure, in terms of a first-order nonlinear oscillator. Solutions are obtained which exhibit time periodicities of the kind of relaxation oscillations and spatial organization in form of a solitary band. Several proposals for further experimental investigation are outlined, and various analogue systems are discussedKeywords
