Abstract
This paper deals with a case of metastatic spinal epidural abscess due to an infection with Staphylococcus aureus in which the diagnosis was made and drainage provided before the appearance of signs or symptoms suggesting a compression of the spinal cord. We believe this case to be one of the first reported in which treatment has been instituted at such an early date, especially in the absence of meningitis. The outcome emphasizes the value of such a procedure. Eleanor M., a well developed and nourished Italian school-girl, aged 16 years, admitted to the Second Medical Service at the Boston City Hospital, March 17, 1933, complained of pain in the lower part of the back which had been present for the preceding forty-six hours.
