Quinones and related compounds in fish tissues

Abstract
The unsaponifiable lipid fractions from the hearts of a number of species of fish have been investigated. No marked differences between the lipids of two marine species (cod and marine lamprey), two freshwater species (char and pike) and two anadromous species (eel and river lamprey) could be found. Ubiquinone-50 was the natural isoprenologue in the hearts of all the species investigated and the concentrations were similar to those in the hearts of mammalian species. Ubiquinone-50 was also found in the liver and white muscle of the cod. The different concentrations of ubiquinone in the heart, liver and muscle of the cod are paralleled by the Qo2 values of the tissues of the adult coho salmon. A larger batch of cod heart yielded sufficient ubiquinone to allow its purification by crystallization. The molecular weight of the ubiquinone, calculated from methoxyl determination, was 855, corresponding to ubiquinone-50.Keywords
