Further studies on lysine deficiency in rats

Abstract
Lysine deficiency in Wistar strains of albino rats of an initial wt. of 110-140 g. produces a mild anemia with a slightly greater reduction in Hb than in red cells. There is a loss of protein from the liver and a hypoproteinemia, while the body protein remains unchanged. None of these symptoms is observed if an adequate diet is restricted in amt. to produce loss of body wt. similar to that observed in lysine-deficient animals. It is suggested that the clinical picture is produced by a general interference with protein synthesis.
